Our MissionWisdom Educational Ministries, Inc. was created as a response to the need for quality biblical study. Many people of faith are often disengaged with actual Bible study, and there are many legitimate reasons. The Bible can be difficult to read, challenging to understand, particularly outside of community or context, and requires much of its readers. The Bible can feel ancient, archaic, boring, and impossible. Faced with the difficulties that lie within, persons dismiss biblical situations as "that was then, this is now." We have in many cases allowed its interpretation to be the responsibility of our ministers. Furthermore, there is another interesting trend. Church school offerings often seem to be most popular when they focus on social or self help issues, rather than on the Bible or its contents. Issues of social justice and "hot button items" are all greatly worthy of our time and attention as people of faith. We are supposed to be about caring for the world and each other. We are right to do so. Are we doing so, however, because it is a "feel good" thing to do, or because "the Bible tells us so?" There is a great need for age appropriate, quality, Christian education materials and classes that make connections for deeply thinking people seeking meaning and spirituality. Educated persons can easily become frustrated by the lack of this material, and find themselves feeling they have surpassed the need for the Bible itself. We begin to feel that the Bible holds nothing more for us than difficult readings and arguments with others, and that it is better left as symbolic than an active part of our faith. We have come as Christians to "get it" - those general themes of the Bible that help us be better people, rather than engagement with the Bible itself. Unless we change this thinking, we run the risk of simply "playing church," claiming to be rooted in Scripture of which we know not. What began as oral tradition must continue to be told, must continue to be read, and must continue to be a critical element in our churches. We need to be reminded more intentionally of the need for our interaction with Scripture. That is not only our right, but our responsibility. That doesn't just mean we can engage Scripture, it means we must engage Scripture on a personal level. When we do this, we always come away surprised at how ALIVE the Bible actually is. We find that if we take our study even half way seriously, we cannot leave unchanged. These stories of faith are dynamic, challenging, frustrating, engaging, emotional, funny, inspiring, beautiful, and the list goes on. We find that within these pages, there are not only the stories of faith, but our stories. Through primarily small group disciple style settings, Wisdom Educational Ministries, Inc. seeks to invite persons into a deeper faith by engaging them intellectually and creatively with the Bible and supportive materials.
